If you have a few minutes you gotta check this sample game created by Arogan with XNA/GSE! This is a little 2D scrolling shooter that kind of reminds me of a modern day 1942 arcade game! Checkout this link... Arogan has a video of game play footage up and a pretty detailed description of the game and the coding that went into it... If you are looking for a good starting point to create a 2D scrolling shooter snag the source for this one!
The folks who brought us BMFontGen and BitmapFont have collected all their XNA tools and created a new package called XNAExtras! This release features new versions of BMFontGen and BitmapFont along with some new classes:
TextBox - Class to manage more complex text rendering
Border - Class to draw sprite borders around rectangles
XSprite - Classes to manage sprites
XSprite needed to be included in this release for the Border class and isn't completly finished so expect to see some more features added to the already great class pretty soon!
It's been a week and a half since Game Studio Express Beta 1 hit the Internet. In that time, We've had a number of sample games released by the community with Source Code available:
Zedox has released the final version of his "Boing" Pong Clone on the XNA GSE Forums.
We just posted part 3 of the tile engine tutorial! This part covers changing the map to contain different layers that allow us to create many fewer tiles... we also add an object layer and a walk layer to define what tiles the character can walk over. The size of the tile area has been expanded and we have created a new game screen overlay to accomodate the change and we now have a player avatar in the middle of the screen to represent our character. Oh there is also some simple tile animation in this tutorial as well!
Checkout out this Boulder Dash Clone by PsyCadelik made with XNA/GSE! It has 5 levels, 1 enemy type and a top 5 high score! The source is available too!
We just posted part 2 of our Tile Engine Tutorial! In this installment we look at expanding the tile set functionality to include more details tiles and tile transitions... we also add smooth scrolling to the map and a "game screen" overlay! Check out the tutorial!
